Tory think-tank suggests the Chancellor is considering taking money from Universal Credit budget in bid to get out of Tax Credits hole – Owen Smith
Owen Smith MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, commenting on reports from a Conservative think-tank that the Chancellor is considering plans to take money from the Universal Credit budget to fund some transitional arrangements on Tax Credits, said:
“The Government is in disarray over plans for tax credits, leaving millions of working families deeply worried about how they will make ends meet next year. The Prime Minister has told people to wait weeks for new plans, while his Cabinet are busy arguing among themselves.
“Amidst this chaos, a Tory think-tank has suggested the Chancellor is considering taking money from the Universal Credit budget, in a bid to get themselves out of this hole. Labour has called for an urgent debate in parliament to block this measure, as it would result in a further work penalty for low and middle paid families. The only acceptable plan should be for the Tories to reverse the tax credit cuts in full, re-instating the £1,350 a year that will otherwise be lost to 3.3 million working families.”
