Syria - Foreign Affairs Select Committee report response - Hilary Benn

labourpress:

Hilary Benn MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, responding to a report by the Foreign Affairs Select Committee on Syria, said:

“The narrow question of whether or not we should carry out airstrikes against ISIL/Daesh targets in Syria appears to have been the focus of the Government’s attention at the expense of developing a coherent political strategy for ending a civil war that has claimed two hundred thousand innocent civilian lives, the majority at the hands of Assad’s forces. This will only happen through a negotiated settlement led by the United Nations.

“The Government urgently needs to develop a strategy for dealing with ISIL/Daesh - who pose a real threat in the Middle East as well as at home - and to focus on the task of ending this threat to international peace and security.”
